A&S Classes

Introduction to Falconry
Master James Cunningham
This class will teach the basics of how a falconer gets a wild bird to return and hunt with the falconer. It will cover both mundane Ohio falconry laws as well as what was done in period. Hopefully a demonstration will follow.

Latvian Tabletweaving
Lady Leah of Wycombe
Latvian tabletweaving designs can be traced back to antiquity. Zig-zag patterns have been found in burial sites back to the twelfth century. The woven lengths can be used to make belts, trim, ties and more. Class fee includes loom, cards and thread. Class size limit: 10 (additional onlookers welcome)

How to Succeed in A&S Without too much crying
Lady Giovanna d'Este
A seasoned Kingdom A&S competitor shows you tips and tricks that make A&S a fun challenge, not something to fear. From planning your entry to documenting it to writing up your documentation and presentation, these proven tricks will give you more confidence in presenting your work in the Middle Kingdom Arts and Sciences faire next year. Class size limit: 10.

Making a 16th c. Hat
Lady Katherine von Aachen
Learn two simple hat patterns that will allow you to make a wide variety of 16th century hats for both men and women.

Silk Reeling
Mistress Emmelyne de Markesburye
Silk and steam! Learn how cocoons are turned into lustrous silk thread. Even better, participate in doing it. This is a casual, hands-on class using inexpensive equipment to demonstrate an ancient craft. Class size limit: 20 (flexible)

The Medieval Apothecary
Lady Xanetia Niccolini
Learn about the variety of medieval medicines made, used and sold by the local apothecary. There will be finished products to view, along instructions on how to make them. A sample ointment will be available to a limited number of people.

Blacksmithing
Tim the Just
Blacksmithing demos will be ongoing throughout the day. (Listen for the clang of the hammer!)

Period Bobbin Lace: Bobbin Tossing for Fun and Profit
Mistress Branwen Scholastica
Have you ever seen bobbin lace in photographs and wished you could have something like that for your 16th-17th century clothing? You can! The very first pattern in this class will be a two-color trim teaching you the basics and providing you with something you can use. While you are learning this off-loom weaving, I'll explain how to "read" bobbin lace patterns so you can return home with your basic kit and be able to understand how to work more than a half-dozen trims and edgings. Class size limit: 6

European Dances
Keith Caserta
Learn English country dances, Italian balli, French bransles and other common SCA dances.

Pimp Your Ride
Lady Elena Alexander
Learn how to dress your horse as well as yourself! Introduction and survey of period horse barding and equestrian trappings.

First Aid for Camping Events
Master Erik Erikson
Learn how to deal with common camping mishaps, and how to put together a first aid kit specifically for camping events

Commedia for Kids
I Scandali
Kids have fun as they learn the techniques of improvisational theatre through games and other entertaining group activities.

Soapmaking
Lady Tilla Chandler
Demo of the soapmaking process, start to finish. Several books on soapmaking, and samples of different kinds of soap, will also be shared with the class.

If you are interested in teaching a class or have questions about A&S, contact Mistress Drea di' Pellegrini

Lady Giovanna d'Este will be demonstrating the techniques of authentic medieval open-fire cooking for all those who wish to come, watch and learn. Master Edoard Haliday will also be demonstrating several aspects of medieval cooking and baking.

    Bobbin Lace and Needlelace
Mistress Branwen Scholastica will set up her Bobbin Lace and Needlelace pavilion, where she will display and demonstrate various forms of lacemaking.

    Weaving on a Warp-Weighted Loom
Lady Ranvaig will have a Viking warp-weighted loom set up and will be demonstrating how cloth was woven on it.
